When the power went, everyone thought that thing would be back to normal quickly. Little did newly recruited Army Specialist Anderson suspect and his colleagues suspect that things would never be the same again.
This is an inventive and entertaining horror tale. Taking an ‘invasion of Earth’ scenario as its starting point, it manages to include all our favourite stories. Alien invaders, Zombies, Vampires and Werewolves all make an appearance. The clever idea behind this is that the Aliens can somehow tap into our minds and mutate into the personification of our darkest fears.
The story is structurally sound. The style seems to be heavily influenced by the travelling narrative of War of the Worlds. Indeed the text is peppered direct and indirect references to many of the horror and science fiction genre’s best offerings. I did feel that specifically mentioning these references was unnecessary in most cases. However, in some instances, it did help to set the scene and as an aid to visualising the action.
There was an over reliance on a spell checker rather than a proof reader (if you don’t already know my feelings about that then checkout my Blog post at http://wp.me/p3FoGJ-22 ). I also felt that further examination of how the aliens tapped into the human mind and exploited our fears would have given the story greater depth.
In the end it was a fairly light and enjoyable read and, with some judicious edits, would be a pleasing addition to the genre.
